Frequently Asked Questions
When discussing longevity of beds with our customers, we advise our customers to change beds every 7 years, based on research from the Sleep Council. Like a lot of well used household items, we need to account for natural wear and tear on beds. Of course this depends on how often the bed is used; this guideline may not apply for beds in guestrooms. For more information, please follow the link: http://www.sleepbiz.co.uk/leaflets/
All beds on our website come with a warranty or guarantee; the details around the warranty or guarantee available with your bed purchase differ by manufacturer. Please note that there are reduced guarantees on some mattresses that are not purchases as part of a divan set; manufacturers often design their bases to complement the mattress specificity. Indeed, some divan bases have pocket springs in them to enhance their support system and take away the work from the mattress, which is believed to promote mattress longevity.

- Single - 90 cm x 190 cm (3' 0" x 6' 3")
- Small-double - 120 cm x 190 cm (4' 0" x 6' 3")
- Double - 135 cm x 190 cm (4' 6" x 6' 3")

Open coil versus pocket springs: Open coil are effectively mass produced spring systems which are linked together across the length and width of the base. The key difference with a pocket sprung base is the springs are not linked to each other, allowing them to move individually. Since the open coil is able to be mass produced relative to the pocket sprung option, the price position is less. They say pocket springs are more supportive and more durable (increased longevity) than open coil as they are individually placed.
Unique patented spring systems: most Sealy mattresses can be purchased with a torsion sprung base; this base consists of specially in-built posture zones. Torsion springs are strategically positioned in a grid formation to ensure proper support for the mattress, which helps to reduce mattress movement and so-called “roll-together”.
Firm edge divan base versus sprung edge bases: some bases are what we refer to as firm edge, meaning the base consists of springs except for around the perimeter of the base, where the edge is firm/solid. The firm edge provides extra support around the edge of the mattress. This type of base is ideal for people who are prone to rolling out of bed.A sprung edge base means the divan base consists of springs throughout the top of the base, including the perimeter, giving the base a softer, more sumptuous feel. Although it is not recommended, some customers sit on the side of the bed to enable them to get in and out of it. The sprung edge divan reduces the overall compression of the springs in the side of the mattress, and subsequently reduce the likelihood of dipping from continuous use in this area.
Platform top bases do not have any springs; the base has a wooden top. This type of base is the cheapest, and will give a firmer feel than the other types of divan base.
Ottoman bases (super storage) lift from the bottom of the bed via a quality piston mechanism, which reveals a large storage space equivalent to the overall base size; ottoman bases represent an alternative to traditional divan drawer storage and becoming a favourite among our customers.
Hideaway divan bases offer significant increases in storage capacity compared with traditional drawer divans. They are only available from the manufacturer: Hypnos. All storage areas are concealed behind beautifully upholstered deep valances, which cover the full height of the divan base. The Hideaway divans offer hidden storage consisting of either a deep large open cavity or two drawers, both hidden by a large fabric valance.
