Burgess Beds - Supporting you for years

Burgess Beds - Supporting you for years

Typical mattress construction falls into two categories;

A) Open coil construction

B) Pocketed construction.

Burgess uses both systems in order to meet the needs and the requirements of each and every customer old and new. The object of this article is to briefly describe the basic construction of each type.

Open coil spring construction

The open coil type of mattress spring is usually marketed by volume producers. Please refer to the brochure for photographs of the individual open coil springs before assembly. The left hand coil has 5 coils and is the type used in all Burgess open coil mattresses with the exception of the Kensington, which uses the right hand coil (which has 6 coils).

Each individual coil is laced together widthways and lengthways, by a wire screw known as a Helical Wire. The second photograph in the brochure shows the helical wire running across the width of the mattress.

Due to the way they are constructed, open coil mattresses tend to have only half the springs assembled into a pocketed mattress. All Burgess Divan bases have an open coil spring construction.

Pocketed spring construction

Here are the key benefits of pocketed spring construction against open coil construction;

a) At least double the amount of coils are used in the pocketed type. For example, the Lancaster mattress uses 960 pocketed springs in the 5’0 size versus the 430 open coil springs in the Buckingham mattress.

b) Pocketed type construction minimises roll together. Photograph three in the brochure shows an individual coil before assembly. Every pocket is hand nested and is sewn together at the centre of every spring therefore effectively isolating each other. See the fourth Photograph in the brochure.

c) The density of the spring count achieved in a nested and pocketed construction is shown in photograph five in the brochure.

d) Due to more individual coil springs being used in the pocketed construction the user should enjoy better support and sleep well. Each individual spring can be very light yet the whole assembled mattress will be very supportive.

In their traditional pocketed mattresses Burgess use 6-coil, barrel shaped, pocketed springs (see photograph three). This is to ensure the full recovery of the spring after compression.
