Wade Upholstery - Care & Maintenance Wade Upholstery Care and Maintenance This article tells you more about your furniture, the people who made it and how to look after it. Please take the time to read through the following article which contains hints and tips on how your furniture can be maintained in showroom condition for many years. Wade Upholstery Now that you have taken delivery of your “Wade Upholstery”, we thought you might like to know a little more about your furniture, the people who built it and how best to ensure that you have years of pleasure from using it. Over the years furniture like yours has been selected for prestige homes in We believe that the reason for our success is quite simple. We have a dedicated team of designers who work in partnership with fabric selectors to ensure that we can combine traditional skills with the best of modern materials to provide furniture built to last well in the future. Every piece of your furniture has been individually hand crafted by one of our skilled craftsmen who all take great personal pride in their work. Pride, that is evident in every hand-finished detail. Only hardwoods from renewable forest resources have been selected for the frame, which has been secured with screws, dowels and glues to maintain its integrity. The set spring units are manufactured, where possible, from traditional coil mesh units, backs are secured with sinuous wire springing. As most springs and frames are made within our own standards that we set ourselves are always maintained. A wide variety of fillings are used in cushons, each configured to present the perfect balance of line and suspension for maximum style and comfort. These may vary depending on the model and design. Where feather, fibre or combination cushions are supplied, we recommend that you regularly “plump” and turn your cushions. This will help to prolong the life and maintain the shape of the interiors. All materials used in the manufacture of “Wade Upholstery” conform to current British Safety Standards on flammability for protection. Care of “Wade Upholstery” Cleaning Dust, dirt and Grit should be removed frequently, as this will affect the durability and colour of your fabric. Remember, people dust wooden furniture because they can see the dust particles, so bear in mind that an enormous amount of dust continually settles on your upholstery and may be allowed to remain because it is not visible. Please vacuum or brush your furniture frequently. Creasing All fabrics are likely to crease, particularly on the arms and cushions. This is not a fault, but a natural feature, and will not have any effect on the fabric’s wearing qualities. Acrylic pile velvets such as draylon type fabrics by their very nature are susceptible to creasing. This is quite normal. Cushions It is essential that cushions are turned and plumped at least twice a week. Turning evens out wear and fading and plumping reduces flattening of cushion interiors. We strongly advise against washing any fabric and if in doubt, consult professional cleaning specialists. Spills and Stains Always deal with spills immediately. In the first instance remove excess with a soft absorbent cloth or white paper tissue. Cleaning instructions will vary according to the type of fabric you have selected. We go into more detail later in the article. Heat and Light Never leave your furniture in direct contact with, or too close to a heat source, a radiator, fan or an open fire. Avoid standing the furniture permanently in a window as the fabric colour may fade. Wearability The most vulnerable point of wear on furniture is the arm where premature wear is often cause by sub-conscious body movements, the results of which can be quite dramatic in localised areas, for example, when a person is sitting watching television, rubbing his hands back and forth over the arms’ surface. We would advise, in most cases, the purchase of arm caps to extend the life of your furniture. We do not recommend the use of arm caps with acrylic pile velvets, such as draylon. Common sense advice for extending the life of your furniture
Leather Leather is a natural material which of course comes from the ox or cow. During the animal’s lifetime it inevitably comes into contact with barbed wire fences, bramble bushes or the horns of other cattle. These encounters leave healed scars and scratches which show on the finished leather. Such marks in no way detract from the wearing qualities; they are indeed conclusive proof of genuine leather. With the correct care, leather will improve with age as it softens and moulds to the body’s contours. Most of the leather we use is hand antiqued. This means that the dark top is rubbed off after the leather has been applied to the frame, revealing a lighter colour underneath. This accelerated antiquing process is produced to meet fashion needs and it should be noted that the colour will continue to wear and reveal more of the lighter colour during use, particularly on the main wearing points – the arms. This is not a fault, but gives the furniture a more attractive antiqued appearance over the years. Fashion Leathers As with traditional leather, Fashion Leathers are more susceptible to showing the natural characteristics of the hide. Stretch marks, scars, scratches, wrinkles and even insect bites acquired during the animals life are part of real leather features, because no one animal is the same, each piece of hide will have it’s own unique story to tell and may vary from piece to piece, there fore they may even be a variation within the same piece of upholstery. Leather Care As mentioned before, atmospheric dust and dirt will land on the leather surface. This should be removed on a regular basis.
NOTE: Some hair dressings and creams can have an adverse affect on leather and care should be taken to protect the leather surface when such preparations are used. We use different types of leather depending on the customer’s requirements. Each type carries its own individual care label. Please follow those instructions prior to reading this general leather care section. Acrylic Pile Velvets (Normally Draylon) These are very durable and normally easy to clean, but are subject to crashing and pile pressure. These marks can be sustainably reduced with the aid of a soft brush and steam. When steaming be sure that you hold it 6 inches away and stroke the fabric in the direction of the pile. Draylon is not washable as it usually has a cotton backing which could shrink if soaked. Most plain draylon velvets are dry-cleanable and your furniture needs cleaning annually depending on the use and the number of people in the home. We advise that you have the work carried out by professional upholstery cleaners, and either your Wade stockist or the Yellow Pages should provide suitable names. NOTE: Printed Draylon Velvets have a particular delicate, random print which requires careful cleaning. Do not use dry cleaning solvents of any kind. A neutral shampoo must be used to deal with any accidental stains, taking care to follow the instructions provided – do not over-wet. For the complete cleaning contact a professional cleaner. Cottons, Flat Weaves and Other Covers We suggest you approach a Professional Upholstery Cleaning Company. Stain Removal – Soft Cover These methods are suggestions only and intended to be helpful.
